Supporting Others In Their Stroke Recovery Journey

Welcome to my story!

My name is Kimeka Electra and I’ve embarked on a journey that has changed my life forever, in a good way of course .

Let me tell you what happened….

In December of 2022, I had a stroke. “You are too young for this!” was what I heard upon my admittance to the hospital. I woke up one morning with a massive headache. It felt like I was getting hit with a hammer to my head, so I tried to hold my head upright. Within minutes, my room started spinning, my speech slurred, and I’d lost the ability to walk. After spending a few nights in the hospital, I really didn’t receive a definite answer as to what caused my stroke. Some specialists mentioned my lack of rest, stress, overworking, my heart, my brain, and the list continued as the potential cause. I was even told that I had multiple sclerosis (MS) and there was nothing they could do, but for me to enjoy life and my kids.

I was released from the hospital three days later and knew that I needed to return to work within a few weeks. When I did, I was still feeling the aftermath of the stroke, like light-headedness, dizziness, slurred speech, difficulty walking, and as a Certified Sign Language Interpreter…(imagine that) lag time with my facial expressions. No harm was done to my consumers. They had no clue of my current physical and health conditions at the time. I was still able to interpret, but it was difficult! I’d asked one of my colleagues to assist me daily from class to class and his willingness to do so meant a lot to me during that time. Thank God for my team, JMM, love you forever for that!

No rehab, no physical therapy, nothing was recommended or even offered to me after my “Big event” just a simple MS diagnosis in which a few weeks after my discharge, several test results proved MS never existed or was the cause. That left me in a state of confusion, let alone, a sense of, “What about me? I need help too!” I felt like I was a part of the few patients that got overlooked.

In July of 2024, I made a cautious decision to do something about my health so I wouldn’t experience another stroke. I wanted to live and not die! Well, I dedicated myself to a personal trainer and began my journey of healing. I was challenged physically, for sure! Achieving workouts, getting a taste of cross-fit, weightlifting, running, learning how to breathe, and all the above relating to body movement and exercising, one thing has been evident, my trainer never let me fail or has ever overlooked me!

Today, I am physically better than I’ve ever been in my entire life! Thinking that I was intentionally working on my physical health, my mental, emotional, and spiritual state has elevated too. I got it all in one…yes!

For my birthday this year, it will make a full year that I’ve been consistently working out 3x/week with a trainer and I would love for you to celebrate my life with me. Whether you show up for support, workout with me for an hour, or donate what you feel led to, just know that you are appreciated and your support will continue to change lives.

Thank you for joining me on this journey and I pray for your overall healing….you got this!!!

Tranding Fundraisers

I’ve created this fundraiser on behalf of my dear friends, Sarah and James, who are enduring every parent’s worst nightmare — the loss of their beloved son, Leo.

We’re heartbroken to share that our dear friend Alex passed away far too soon. His light, his laughter, his incredible spirit — they touched so many, and his absence is deeply felt.

Hi everyone — Angela here, writing on behalf of Matthew (for now). On December 6th, completely out of the blue, Matthew suffered a severe stroke.
