Kai is a 10.5-year-old pit/lab mix, a retired service dog, and the absolute love of my life. On Wednesday, June 4th, after a sudden change in behavior, I rushed him to the vet — where they found a 14cm mass in his chest.
We’re now facing a whirlwind of diagnostics and decisions. His care team has recommended a CT scan, biopsy, and further imaging, followed by surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, or a combination, depending on what the tests reveal. The cost for just the diagnostics alone — CT, biopsy, labs, X-rays, and medications — is expected to reach $5,000, not including travel to reach a specialist for his care.
Kai came into my life when he was just 5 months old — one day away from being euthanized. I adopted him without hesitation, and he has spent the last 10 years giving back every ounce of love tenfold. He served faithfully as a working dog, an emotional anchor, and a constant companion through some of the hardest seasons of my life.
Now it’s my turn to fight for him.
