My Mom the Helper Needs Your Help Now to Push Past Paralysis

My mom is not the type of person to ask for help. It’s not in her nature. In her job as a veterinary technician managing an emergency animal hospital, she was always helping others in crisis (animals and people). That’s why I’m reaching out now on her behalf—because now my mom needs the caring of others to help deal with a crisis none of us would have ever imagined.

In early April, I got the call from the hospital that my mom (Julia) had been in a motorcycle accident. Rushing to the hospital, I didn’t know if she would survive. For weeks, following multiple surgeries to fix her broken body, her fate remained uncertain. Her back was broken in three places, her pelvis was broken in half, her arm was broken and she had a serious concussion (yes, she had worn her helmet).

Because of the damage to her spine, my mom is now a paraplegic—unable to move her legs, unable to feel anything below her waist.

BUT, amazingly, her spirit is intact and, now in a rehab facility, she’s relentless in pushing herself to regain as much control over her body and as much independence as possible. Her dream (and my dream for her) is to come home and get back to work helping others. But she’ll need transportation (a wheelchair-accessible vehicle with hand controls) and some modifications to our split-level home (two chair lifts). That’s why I’m reaching out to you. Every dollar you can donate will be directed to delivering on those modifications to a vehicle and home.

Every day, Mom fights against what fate delivered in that horrific accident. And every day, there are little signs that maybe paralysis is not permanent. Sometimes, her toes twitch. Sometimes, her entire leg twitches. Though the movements are uncontrolled, she’s fighting to get some control back.

She’s my hero in her persistence, her patience, her courage and her conviction.

My mom helped me achieve my dreams (I became a veterinary assistant, following her passions and my own!). With your help, I’d like to help deliver on her dreams—of being able to come home and go back to work, helping others. Whatever you are able to give will be deeply appreciated. And I promise to keep you updated on every twitch that turns into a movement.

Tranding Fundraisers

I’ve created this fundraiser on behalf of my dear friends, Sarah and James, who are enduring every parent’s worst nightmare — the loss of their beloved son, Leo.

We’re heartbroken to share that our dear friend Alex passed away far too soon. His light, his laughter, his incredible spirit — they touched so many, and his absence is deeply felt.

Hi everyone — Angela here, writing on behalf of Matthew (for now). On December 6th, completely out of the blue, Matthew suffered a severe stroke.
