In Sep 2022, Tony was injured at work and went to undergo surgery to repair a fractured orbital. Prior to the surgery, they ran blood tests and through those tests, we learned that his white blood cells were high. Over the next few months, he went through some extensive testing and in January 2023, we received the devastating news that he had a rare form of leukemia called CMML. Over the next year, more tests were done and we were informed the diagnosis changed from CMML to MPN-U. The only cure for either would be a bone marrow transplant, also known as a stem cell transplant.
Tony remained chronic (no symptoms) until Dec 2024 when the leukemia went into the acute stage. Between Christmas and the first few weeks in January, we were making regular trips to UMMC in Baltimore, MD for blood tests, platelet and blood transfusions, from what started as once every 3 days to almost every day prior to his admission in mid-January. He underwent his first round of aggressive chemo treatment that caused multiple side effects. He underwent his next round of chemo that took place in Feb/March.
On April 30th, Tony was admitted to prepare for the stem cell transplant, which required another round of chemo prior to the transplant that took place on May 6th. He was fortunate enough that his sister was a 100% match and was his donor. However, after the transplant and over the next few weeks, he experienced a few setbacks and encountered a number of additional tests, scans, etc. He was discharged on May 31st, but we have to stay in Baltimore for at least another 60 days as he has to be close to the hospital in case there is a rejection, in addition to the routine doctor appointments and lab work.
During this time, we need support both emotionally and financially. Donations received will help offset the burden of his medical bills not covered by insurance, maintaining our household while also maintaining his needs in Baltimore. In addition, he will have some dental procedures he will need in the upcoming future.
Please hold him in positivity and prayer during this time of healing and this new normal we have to navigate for our family.
