How the need came about:
Hello friends, my name is TJ. It is difficult for me to ask for financial support… yet, Mr. Rogers often reminds us, “look for the helpers,” so that is what I am doing here. People who know me know I am a huge Mr. Rogers fan. He taught us we are all neighbors, so I want to invite you into my neighborhood.
Please join me in my efforts of working towards raising the funds for my dental procedure of implants for 7 extracted teeth. Some might wonder how my teeth became damaged to the point of requiring multiple extractions. This is a direct result of years of grinding my teeth at night in response to an extensive history of childhood abuse.
I work seven days a week right now to save money toward the cost of my procedure. That consists of 3 different jobs, including working with a client with special needs, my small private practice, and a group practice. I see some clients either at no charge or a very minimal fee, so they can continue their therapy regardless of ability to pay.
The systemic effect of teeth on the body:
I was hesitant to write this because it seems there are so many big things going on in everybody’s lives. As I thought more about it, I recognized how big a deal this really is. I could talk about how my smile has diminished over the years, as my teeth have become more worn over time, despite my efforts to maintain them. My dentist assured me that I took good care of my teeth, but it didn’t look like it. I love smiling at people because it helps them feel welcomed and valued, and I realize how important my smile is to me. Additionally, healthy teeth enable us to eat a variety of healthy foods, which helps us stay healthy and reduces the risk to other parts of our bodies. Staying healthy enables us to work and live independently and to know that we’re able to contribute to the community around us.
I love my job, and my dental damage is impacting it:
A big reason your support would mean so much is because this directly impacts how I’m able to work with people as a therapist. I’ve worked in the mental health field since 1979 with many different people in a multitude of circumstances. Being able to talk with people is what my life is about. Some people might consider this their career, but for myself, it is a calling. I’ve never been able to imagine doing anything else. Every day, I am privileged to be able to share time, listen to people in some of their most difficult moments, help them explore meaning in their lives, support them, and help them find ways to navigate their lives. Being able to speak clearly and comfortably is essential to be able to do this work.
Work I do in the community:
When I’m not working, my other passion is being involved in social justice work. I first did this when I was 19, and to this day, I am fortunate to be able to use my voice to stand in solidarity with people society might otherwise prefer to ignore. I have lived experience dealing with issues related to poverty and trying to navigate a health system that does not support people without means. I have stood in solidarity with people who face a variety of injustices in society. Over the years, I have seen how community is essential to overcoming any given struggle people face. I love to support others, and I’m grateful to be encouraged to accept that kind of support now.
*Should donations exceed what is needed, the remaining balance will be donated to BeLoved Asheville. I’ve known the founders since 2013. Their work has been tireless and compassionate, and they make a big difference to so many.*
Expenses:
Total is $7,100
The procedure that I need would cost between $20,000 and $30,000 in the U.S., but is about a quarter of that in Mexico. I have found a respected dental clinic, and even with the travel and lodging costs, it will be about a fraction of the cost here.
Travel & cost of living expenses:
Round trip tickets for my daughter and I are $600 each, and the hotel stay is $578 for 7 nights, as I’ll need to be there for 8 days.
