Earlier last month, our beloved Sunny received a diagnosis no one ever wants to hear: Triple Negative Breast Cancer—a more aggressive form of breast cancer that requires immediate and intensive treatment. While we’re hopeful and optimistic about her care, the road ahead will involve many doctor’s appointments, an MRI, genetic testing, and ultimately surgery and chemotherapy.
Sunny and my mom, Azeneth, will both need to take time away from work to manage treatment, recover, and attend every appointment together. We’re raising funds to help cover lost income and provide the breathing room they need to focus fully on healing—without financial stress hanging over their heads.
If you know my mom, you know she has spent her entire life serving others. She’s worked in social services in Kalamazoo for decades—supporting families through the 2008 financial crisis, advocating for youth in the juvenile court system, and now helping immigrant children access legal protections through her work at a nonprofit. She’s quietly helped so many people. Now, it’s time to help her.
Sunny has been in our lives for 13 years. She’s the kind of person who brings people together—hosting cookouts, showing up without being asked, and becoming the most devoted grandmother to my children. She has the biggest heart, and she loves deeply and generously.
