Hey y’all, I’m writing this through tears because we are down to the wire and still don’t have what we need for our sweet Rick’s recovery after surgery.
Rick is one of our adopted sons. We brought him and his siblings into our home through foster care, and in December 2024, we officially adopted all three. They’re not just in our care—they’re our children, through and through.
Rick is 3 years old and one of the bravest little souls I’ve ever known. Before he came into our family, he suffered unspeakable abuse at the hands of his biological mother—abuse that left his little body broken in ways we are only now beginning to fully understand. The damage done to his hips and legs is so severe and so unique that even the team at Cook Children’s Hospital—who have seen just about everything—have said this is unlike anything they’ve ever treated.
He is now scheduled for two major surgeries in July to try and repair the damage. These are intense, specialized procedures that will require a long and delicate recovery. His doctor has specifically requested that Rick recover in a pediatric medical bed—one that completely surrounds him like a crib but has drop-down sides so we can safely access and care for him after surgery. It’s a safety issue, a comfort issue, and a medical necessity for his healing.
We’ve been working on this since April, trying to get one through our insurance. We’ve gone through multiple DME providers who either ghosted us or told us at the last minute they actually don’t carry the bed, after saying they did. That’s now wasted months of precious time. We’ve officially been told that no provider in our area that takes our insurance can get this bed for us.
So we’re faced with having to pay out of pocket… and y’all, these beds run anywhere from $3,000 to $7,000. We’re a family doing our best on a modest income, and this kind of unexpected expense is just beyond what we can pull off alone.
We don’t want to wait until after surgery to scramble for a safe place for Rick to heal. He’s already been through more than most adults ever will, and we just want to give him the best chance at a full recovery—physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
If you’re able to donate anything at all, or even just share this story, it would mean the world to us. We believe in the power of prayer, community, and kindness—and we’ve seen miracles before.
Please help us make sure Rick has what he needs to recover safely. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
