Hi, I’m Melissa and this sweet guy is Morgan. He’s 11 years old, I’ve raised him from a 4 week old kitten. Recently he developed corneal ulcers. We don’t know why, the vet said it could have been an injury from playing with one of our two other cats, illness, virus, bacterial infection, many things can cause them. He doesn’t have any kind of disease processes or other injuries evident now, however. The ulcers ruptured and he was bleeding from his eye, we had to take him to the pet ER and it drained us. Now he needs his eye removed and we just don’t have the money. We live paycheck to paycheck since the pandemic when I lost my job. I’m now disabled and can’t work anymore, after a long EMS career. As my husband and my savings has been slowly depleted over the past 5 years, our credit has gone down along with it and we don’t qualify for CareCredit or anything else available for unexpected pet expenses. We couldn’t afford to insure him because of his age, it was an astronomical monthly amount. I mean, were drowning, our power is even shut off at this point but Morgan shouldn’t have to suffer because life has kicked our butts for years now.
I know there are those who say “If you can’t afford your pets, don’t have them” but it’s not that simple. These cats are our family. We’re all they know. I can’t abandon 11 year old cats who have been with me since tiny kittens at some shelter. I love them too much. That’s like being told to give up my kids over money issues. I’m responsible, I know, but when I rescued them as kittens, we were in a much better position financially. Now we can’t seem to break the surface and breathe, but it’s not Morgan’s fault and I can’t watch him suffer while we save money each pay. I have to suck up my pride and ask for help from anyone who cares and is able. I’m sorry and thank you for reading this.
