Melissa’s journey is one of unimaginable strength and unwavering determination. In April 2023, she was diagnosed with MPNST (Malignant Peripheral Nerve Sheath Tumor) Sarcoma—a rare and aggressive form of cancer with a 5-year survival rate of just 15%. Since then, she has been in the fight of her life.
Her battle began with two major surgeries—one to remove the tumor and another to remove the surrounding muscle. She then endured 30 rounds of radiation in hopes of preventing recurrence. Despite these efforts, the cancer returned just months later, in October 2023, with a local recurrence and metastasis to her lung.
Melissa began chemotherapy immediately and underwent five additional rounds of radiation on her lung. While that tumor responded and began to shrink, the tumor in her pelvis continued to grow. By May 2024, it had reached 14 cm and required a third major surgery. Despite trying a third chemotherapy regimen, new scans showed the pelvis tumor was growing again—and now the cancer had spread to her sacrum (the base of the spine), requiring yet another round of radiation and a fourth chemotherapy.
In January 2025, she pursued a new ablation procedure to shrink the pelvic tumor again—this time at personal cost, as it was not covered by insurance. Alongside this, she began treatment with Keytruda, an immunotherapy drug, in a hopeful effort to boost her immune system’s response. That procedure took place in April 2025, and they are currently waiting to see if it made a difference.
Most recently, Melissa’s pain intensified, and a CT scan showed the pelvic tumor had enlarged to 14 cm again. In June 2025, Melissa had another surgery for removal of the pelvic tumor and is now in recovery to continue her fight.
Melissa has endured:
• 4 major surgeries
• 3 rounds of radiation
• 6 different chemotherapy regimens
• Multiple metastases and recurrences
• Out-of-pocket treatments not covered by insurance
Even through all of this, Melissa continues to work remotely for the VA hospital, missing very few days. Her strength is incredible.
Chad, her husband, and her two sons, Jack, heading to college in the fall, and James, a high school sophomore, have all been pillars of support, showing strength well beyond their years. They are her reason to fight every single day.
