Maxwell Kanyengambeta is a 32-year-old primary school teacher, loving husband, and devoted father to a young son in Malawi, Africa. He has dedicated his life to educating children and uplifting his community—but now he needs our help.
In October 2023, Maxwell was diagnosed with rectal cancer. Despite his courageous fight and more than 14 rounds of chemotherapy, the tumor has not responded. Surgery is currently too risky, and doctors are now recommending a combined course of chemotherapy and radiation therapy to reduce the tumor before surgery becomes an option.
Tragically, radiotherapy is only available at a private hospital in Blantyre—a long and difficult journey from Maxwell’s home—and the costs are far beyond what his family can afford. Maxwell has been unable to work for more than two years due to his illness, and the financial burden of treatment, travel, and daily living has become overwhelming.
Maxwell urgently needs $10,000 to cover the cost of treatment, transportation, and basic support for his family during this difficult time.
I first met Maxwell when he was a secondary school student during my time in the Peace Corps. Even then, he spent his free time tutoring classmates who were struggling—always giving, always caring. That same spirit has guided him throughout his life as a teacher and community role model.
Malawi is home to some of the kindest and most generous people in the world, but it is also one of the poorest countries—most people live on less than $2 a day. Your contribution, no matter how small, can have a profound impact on Maxwell’s life and the future of the students he hopes to teach again.
Please consider giving what you can and sharing this campaign. Together, we can help Maxwell reclaim his health and return to the classroom—and to the life and family he loves.
