Khloe, my beloved Yorkshire Terrier, has spent more than 11 years as a certified therapy dog, bringing comfort, confidence, and connection to children with special needs. From just six months old, Khloe worked faithfully by my side—in both my private speech-language therapy practice and across countless schools—serving children with autism, Down syndrome, apraxia, anxiety, and severe communication delays.
Her impact wasn’t just professional—it was deeply personal. Children who once remained silent found the courage to speak when talking to Khloe. A young boy with a profound stutter began forming clear words with her by his side. A boy with autism who once feared dogs learned to trust again—because Khloe simply stayed close and kind. Over time, he not only bonded with her, but also became more sociable with other children and adults at the park, smiling and interacting in ways his family had never seen before.
She has helped hundreds of children communicate, connect, and feel safe. Once, she even ran across a park to comfort a crying child she’d never met. That’s who she is.
Now, Khloe is facing her own fight.
She was diagnosed with a spinal tumor threatening her mobility and comfort. After undergoing complex spinal surgery, her veterinary team could not fully remove the tumor, and it’s likely to return. She’s also endured orthopedic complications:
Left hind leg surgery for torn ligaments and patella displacement
A fractured right patella, which still needs surgery
Chronic pain, weakness, and daily mobility struggles
Khloe’s total medical expenses have already exceeded $25,000, and her care is far from over.
