Help Bring Adelaide to the U.S. to Care for Her Mom
Hi, my name is Kabi, and I’m starting this fundraiser on behalf of my best friend Justina and her family. The family is trying to bring Adelaide to the U.S. under humanitarian grounds so she can care for their mom full-time. Justina lives alone with her mother in the U.S. It’s a complicated legal process with significant costs — and they need our help.
This is a letter from Justina
Hello, my name is Justina.
I’m raising funds to bring my older sister, Adelaide, to the U.S. so she can become the full-time caregiver for our beloved mother, Esther.
Two months ago, our lives changed when our mom suffered a severe stroke. It left her unable to walk, dress, or use the restroom on her own. I’ve been her sole caregiver ever since — providing around-the-clock care, navigating her medical appointments, and doing everything I can to support her physical and emotional recovery.
My mother is a fiercely independent woman who raised six children, often alone, and worked tirelessly as a hospital PCA before her stroke. Her strength is unmatched — but now, she needs help. And we want that help to come from someone she deeply trusts.
Why We’re Asking for Help
My sister Adelaide is a registered nurse in Ghana with over a decade of experience in hospital and clinic settings. She was the first person to care for our mom when she had her stroke while visiting Ghana. Her dedication, medical knowledge, and cultural understanding made all the difference in those early, critical days. She was the reason our mother regained initial mobility on her left side. Their bond is unbreakable — they speak for hours every day, and Adelaide is the first person Mom wants to talk to each morning.
We are working with an immigration lawyer to bring Adelaide to the U.S. under a humanitarian visa so she can be by our mom’s side — not just as her daughter, but as a skilled nurse and the culturally sensitive caregiver she trusts and needs.
Unfortunately, this process is costly, and we’ve exhausted most of our resources trying to keep up with care, legal steps, and paused income.
The Breakdown of Costs:
• Tuition balance (due in 2 weeks) – $500
(Adelaide is finishing her BSN, which is required for international nursing licensing)
• Lawyer’s fees – $3,500
• Court filing and processing fees – $630
• Flight to the U.S. – $1,578
• Miscellaneous travel/admin costs – $200
• Emergency cushion (medical, immigration documents, etc.) – ~$500
Our total fundraising goal is $6,908.
(Our initial estimate was $6,408, but we added a $500 buffer for any unexpected costs — international legal and medical processes often have surprises.)
Why This Matters
Justina had to take family medical leave from work and pause her studies to care for her mom. She’s had some help from generous friends, but this next step — bringing Adelaide here — is one she can’t do alone. We truly believe this is the best path forward for her mom’s healing, peace of mind, and dignity.
I’ve watched Justina give her entire heart and life to caring for her mom, juggling her studies with her caregiving all in her 20s. I want to help her bring her sister here to share that load and give their mom the culturally sensitive, loving care she needs and deserves.
If you’re able to give anything, we are deeply grateful. If you can’t give right now, we completely understand — even sharing this campaign would mean the world to us.
Thank you so much for reading, caring, and supporting my best friend and my family in this incredibly hard chapter.
With love and gratitude,
Kabi
