Hi, my name is Lydia, and I’m the proud mom of a brave 12-year-old girl named Belah.
Just a few months ago, Belah was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes—a life-changing diagnosis that has brought many challenges, including a terrifying experience when her blood sugar reached 998. She was rushed to the ICU in diabetic ketoacidosis and spent a full week fighting to stabilize. It was one of the scariest moments of our lives, and we never want to face something like that again.
That’s why we’ve started this fundraiser—to raise the funds needed to get Belah matched with a diabetic alert dog.
These incredible dogs are trained to detect changes in blood sugar levels—often before any device or person can. They’re taught to alert their owners by licking, pawing, barking, or jumping, giving critical warning signs of both low and high blood sugar. This early detection can prevent medical emergencies, including comas or dangerous spikes that lead to diabetic ketoacidosis.
At night, Belah’s blood sugar often drops while she sleeps—and she doesn’t always wake up to the alarm. These dogs are trained to alert all night and will jump on Belah if she doesn’t respond, her dog would also be able to find me for help if Belah still doesn’t respond. A diabetic alert dog would be her protector, giving our family peace of mind while drastically improving her safety, health, independence, and emotional well-being.
However, these life-saving dogs require intense, specialized training—and they are expensive.
The program requires a $3,000 deposit just to begin the matching process.
The full cost of training and delivering a dog specifically tailored to Belah’s needs is $19,000.
