I set this fundraiser up to help my sister and brother-in-love, Donna and Daniel Reyes.
My sister Donna is having a lot of medical issues.
Since January, what started with 2 swollen fingers has now progressed to 3 specialists, 9 medications, and now a hospital stay because she is having trouble breathing and they are running test after test trying to figure out what all is going on with her. RA, infections, inflammation, lung issues on top of other underlying conditions.
She has not been able to work since January. She has tried to apply for government assistance (disability, food stamps, TANF, etc…) but is not eligible.
My brother-in-love, Daniel, also has medical issues and multiple medications. He thankfully has his social security coming in, but with that, he can only work part-time.
Needless to say, their finances are being hit and stretched to the limits. Hospital bills, medical tests, procedures, treatments, and medications… along with mortgage, utilities, groceries, and gas… stressful is an understatement.
Growing up, our dad and then our brother always led our family to help those who couldn’t help themselves. We were always involved in fundraisers, serving at the church and community. We grew up knowing many hands make lighter loads.
There was not a benefit dance or bingo that you didn’t see Daniel running the grill and Donna running the counter… that was their gift of serving. They served without question, never thinking it would be them one day needing help.
Even though we grew up serving to help others, it’s not easy asking for help in return… but here we are.
