My name’s Skylar Laas. On March 9th, 2024, I was in a motorcycle accident out in Ocotillo Wells. I was transported to the hospital with bilateral ankle fractures, a shattered left heel, and a broken fibula. Surprisingly/Luckily, nothing else really besides just being sore.
I was in ICU for 9 days out by Ocotillo Wells (Desert Regional Medical Center). My parents and sister were driving back and forth a couple of hours each way to come visit.
I was discharged after figuring out who was going to fix me and figuring out insurance because I had none at the time of the accident! (Thank you, Dr. Charles N. Moon/LifeSaver). My bill was starting at $100k for the stays at the hospital, a couple of weeks at Cedars Sinai, and for the surgeries I needed. Not including the stay at the first hospital and first surgeries (right ankle/foot external fixator).
Once I got to Cedars Sinai after a couple of weeks of waiting, Dr. Moon did the first surgery, taking the external fixator off and fixing my right foot/ankle that was mangled. I had to have 3 surgeries on that foot/ankle.
The left one was a challenge to piece the shattered pieces back together but feels good as new with just one surgery (has a chain connecting it together).
I was wheelchair-bound for 6+ months. I did physical therapy to get back going. It was rough, but Andy Macdonald at Body Mechanix Simi Valley, CA, thank you! I appreciate all the help you’ve given me.
I started walking—I wouldn’t say normal, but peg-legging—a year after my injury and still peg-legging typing this message. Just getting stronger and back to where I was every day.
I love to ride dirt bikes and anything with two wheels and anything with a motor. Just want to get back to doing the things I love with friends and family ❤️
Just keep on keeping on!
I hate asking for help, which is why I haven’t made one of these fundraiser pages before. I thought my situation wasn’t as serious as others, but I’m in a rough spot right now and just trying to get back to where I once was.
I currently do not have a consistent job to be able to pay the medical bills and minor other bills I have month to month. I do side work as a motorcycle/car mechanic, construction demo/remodel with my pops, pressure washing/painting, and other weird side jobs.
I have my CDL A License and have been trying to get into that after my injury, just need to find an honest company to work for.
I LOVE TO RIDE DIRT BIKES
