Last month I took my daughter in for her 6 month checkup, her pediatrician noticed her heart sounded louder on the right side of her chest. She wanted us to get an x-ray done to see what was going on. The x-ray showed that her heart was pointing to the right. On May 12th we went up to Helen Devos in Grand Rapids where they did an Echo (ultrasound) on her chest and an EKG where they officially diagnosed my daughter with Dextrocardia. For those of you who don’t know what that means, it means that her heart is facing towards the right side of her chest. A typical heart faces towards the left and hers does not. In some cases of Dextrocardia other organs can also be flipped to the wrong sides of the abdomen. After the trip to Helen Devos last month they wanted to get an abdominal ultrasound done to check the locations of her other organs. Her liver is on the opposite side and so is her pancreas. Both kidneys are enlarged. The right kidney is a grade 2 and the left is a grade 1. Grade 5 means surgery is needed. Her pediatrician wants me to call Helen Devos next week to schedule an appointment with their immunology department to check on her kidneys and then another ultrasound in 2 months.
