Byron is a vibrant 24-year-old with a passion for photography and music, especially drumming. Over Thanksgiving, Byron suffered a sudden and severe spinal injury after a fall at home. He lost movement from the waist down, and by the time he reached the hospital, he could no longer move his hands or arms. After undergoing spinal surgery, Byron is now on a long road to recovery. He’s making progress—his feeding tube was recently removed and he’s eating solids again—but he still cannot walk or care for himself independently. He’s been in and out of the hospital, and every day brings new challenges for him and our family.
Byron is being cared for by his grandmother, who is retired and the only one able to be with him consistently. However, she is older and not able to do the heavy lifting and turning that Byron needs. The rest of our family is doing everything we can to help, but no one is able to provide the level of care he needs without potentially quitting their job. Caring for Byron at home has been overwhelming. We are not medical professionals, and the support we expected from home healthcare has not materialized due to ongoing insurance issues. Byron needs specialized wound care, physical therapy, an in-house nurse, and a hospital bed that fits his 6’3” frame. Unfortunately, insurance will not cover these essential needs, and we are struggling to provide the level of care he deserves. The financial burden is heavy, and we are doing everything we can to make sure Byron is safe and comfortable.
We are raising funds to hire private care for Byron so he can continue his recovery at home and regain his independence. Byron is creative, determined, and has his whole life ahead of him. Our hope is to give him the chance to pursue his dreams and get his life back on track. Any support will help us provide the care he needs and bring hope to our family during this difficult time.
