This isn’t just a fundraiser – it’s a love-fueled rally for Barb (my Mom) and Hank, two people who’ve spent decades showing up with big hearts, good food, and the kind of energy that makes every room better. Now it’s our turn to show up for them.
Last week, their world turned upside down.
Hank – my mom’s husband of nearly 25 years and everyone’s favorite good-time guy – was rushed into emergency care after what seemed like a routine sore throat turned out to be a life-threatening bacterial infection. He was placed on a ventilator and rushed into emergency surgery with a bleak prognosis.
But if you know Hank, you know: he’s not going down without a fight.
Almost 2 weeks later, he’s out of the ICU – a huge milestone – and awake. But we are far from out of the woods. He’s still undergoing frequent surgeries, receiving specialized care, and is expected to remain in the hospital for at least two more weeks. While we’re feeling hopeful, we’re also preparing for a long and challenging recovery that will include extensive aftercare.
Barb – my mom, the woman who’s laughed at every joke in every play (the ideal audience member!), shown up with snacks and sass in equal measure, and held down every storm for the people she loves – is handling this unimaginable stretch with strength, grace, and her signature flair. She’s been by Hank’s side throughout, doing what she always does: loving big and showing up fully (while winning over the nurses with sweetness and cookies).
If you know Barb and Hank, you know their story fittingly started at a karaoke bar in Arizona, followed (naturally) by a karaoke wedding. They’re die-hard Yachtley Crew fans, expert hosts, and the kind of people who bring everyone together – whether it’s for a song, a story, or a shared dish that somehow tastes like comfort and joy at the same time.
What I’m asking for isn’t viral attention or impossible goals. I’d just like to give them a cushion – a bit of breathing room before they need to touch savings. Something that helps take pressure off logistics, so they can focus on healing, love, and eventually, laughing again.
We all know the world is better with Hank in it and I want to make that feel as easy as possible to achieve.
If you’ve ever been hugged by Barb, had a cigar with Hank, played cards or sang along with them, shared a meal, or simply felt the warmth of being around them – now’s the time to show up.
Whether it’s $10, a heartfelt message, or simply sharing this with someone who loves them too – every single gesture matters. Let’s surround Barb and Hank with the kind of care and support they’ve always given to others so freely!!
